Bolts are designed to secure gates, garden sheds and other doors. If you are looking to add security to your garden gate, gate bolts are essential. There are two main types of gate bolts: door bolts and floor bolts.
What are gate door bolts?
Also known as padlock bolts or simply padbolt, gate door bolts are installed high up on the gate door (similar to the position of a gate latch) and are designed to be used with a padlock for extra security. In case you require a gate bolt for your garden gate door, we stock heavy duty gate bolts, such as 200mm marine grade stainless steel heavy padlock bolt and a variety of other bolts suitable for external use.
How to fit gate padbolt lock.
Materials:
- Gate bolt
- Drill
- Drill bit
- Screws
- Pencil
- Padlock
How to:
Step 1 – Place the gate bolt on your desired location on the door.
To note: Do not fit the bolt right on the edge of the gate. Pull it 5-10mm from the edge.
Step 2 - With a pencil, mark the screw holes. Remove the gate bolt and pre-drill the screw holes you’ve marked on the door.
Step 3 – Place the gate bolt on the door again and screw it into place.
Step 4 – Close the gate and slide the bolt into the closed position. Place the receiver plate over the end of the closed bolt. Ensure you keep the receiver from the edge of the gate.
Step 5 – Screw the receiver into place. Add the padlock, and you’re set!
What are gate floor bolts?
Gate floor bolts, also known as gate cane bolts or gate drop bolts, are designed to be installed on the bottom of the door to secure it to the ground. These can also be used to hold gates open. At Ironmongery Experts, we also supply a large selection of drop bolts, including 457mm lokkbolt lockable drop bolt for metal gates and premium 600mm black garage door bolt.
How to fit a gate drop bolt.
Materials:
- Pipe
- Drop bolt
- Hammer
- Threaded rod
- Drill
- Drill bits
- Screws
How to:
Step 1 – If you are installing a gate bolt into the soil, it is recommended to fit a pipe so that the bolt is always secure in the down position. Make a hole in the soil for the pipe. You can do this by hammering a threaded rod into your desired location.
Step 2 - Then, hammer the pipe into the hole. The pipe needs to be low enough on the ground that the gate clears the top of the pipe.
Step 3 – Place the drop bolt on the gate ensuring it can close into the pipe.
Step 4 - Mark the screw holes. Remove the bolt and pre-drill the screw holes.
Step 5 – Place the drop bolt once again on the gate and screw it in place.
