Gate springs ensure that your gate self-closes to improve the security of the door. So, whether you’re hosting a children’s birthday party in your garden or simply own a dog, it’s important to have a gate spring attached to your wooden gate.

At Ironmongery Experts we have a selection of gate springs for you to choose from, including our 200mm zinc plated coil gate spring and our 250mm zinc plated coil gate spring. Once you’ve purchased one of your choice, you can follow this guide to fit your own gate spring to a wooden gate.

We recommend that you consult a professional when completing any DIY projects. Please read our disclaimer at the end of this article.

Materials:

  • Drill
  • Gate spring
  • Rivets
  • Screws

Instructions:

  1. Attaching the gate spring to the hinge

Whenever installing a gate spring, you always need to attach the spring to the hinge of your wooden gate whilst also ensuring that the adjustment knob is positioned on the top of the spring before you fit it.

Using your drill, remove a screw from the gate hinge before placing the top of the gate spring against the hinge. Affix the spring using the existing screw. You may have to use your drill to make a second incision in the gate spring to place a second screw in to secure it.

  1. Attaching the gate spring to the fence post

Place the bottom of the gate spring against the fence post and make sure the brackets are even. You can now affix the spring against the fence post using your drill and a screw, before inserting the rivet into the bottom to allow the spring to function.

  1. Adjust the tension of the spring

You now need to adjust the tension of the spring, which can be a trial and error process. All you need to do is place the tension key into the corresponding hole and turn the key anti-clockwise a couple of times. Now you can place the second rivet into the top of the spring. Then pull back the gate and test it to see if closes at a speed you are happy with. If not, just remove the rivet and loosen the tension with the key and you should have a fully-functioning self-closing gate.
