Cylinder locks, also known as pin tumblers, are a sturdy and reliable way to protect your home, business or storage. Use this simple guide and learn how to replace a cylinder lock in under 10 minutes.

Materials.

  • Yale Cylinder Night Latch
  • Screwdriver
  • Plyers

Instructions.

To remove the old latch, the first thing you want to do is remove the grub screws on the inside of the latch. Note: these may be on the front or side of the case.

Once the grub screws are removed, simply lift the latch to separate the lock case from the door. You’ll need to have the key in the lock to do this. Now, you can remove the retaining screws from mounting plate, be aware that these may be longer than you expect.

Remove the cylinder from the lock and hold the new tail next to your rim night latch cylinder. This needs to be cut down to the same length as the previous one.

You now need to line up the new cylinder tail with the tail plate on the backplate of the door. Once aligned, turn the key. This should turn the tail plate lock case.

Refit the screws and retaining lock, then reattach the lock case. Be sure not to overtighten the screws, as this will restrict turning the cylinder. Once the grub screws are reinserted, you’re good to go.
