Working door locks keep your home, family and belongings safe. However, if these are not properly maintained, they will eventually be more difficult to operate or break sooner than expected. Maintaining your door locks will not only protect your home but will also prevent costly future repairs.
- Clean your locks.
It’s important to clean your door locks frequently, especially your entrance door lock. This type of maintenance is quite easy – simply use a mild soap and water to wipe down any oil, grime or dirt which can build up on the door locks. Then, dry the lock with a soft cloth.
- Lubricate your locks.
You should lubricate your door locks at least once a year. There are two ways to lubricate your locks. You can either spray a small amount of lubricant in the keyhole then insert your key in and out repeatedly, wiping any dirt from the key each time or for a more comprehensive lubrication, remove the lock from the door and apply lubricant to both the latch and bolt.
- Adjust your locks.
After some years of use, your door locks might need to be adjusted and their fixings tightened to ensure proper operation.
- Don’t forget about the rest.
Don’t forget to maintain the door itself and all door hardware, including hinges and latches.
